UNPO 2009 Campaign: Earth, Exploitation and Survival
The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization have launched their 2009 campaign entitled "Earth, Exploitation and Survival". It hopes to raise awareness of the myriad of problems related to the environmental exploitation and degradation that many of their indigenous Members face on a daily basis. Every week they will be publishing an article or interview related to exploitation and land. The campaign includes a petition for the wider ratification of ILO Convention 169.

the week: Earth Exploitation and Survival

subject : "Earth, Exploitation and Survival" Campaign featuring its first article 'Valentine's Day; Not So Rosy for Oromia'

Dear Sir, Madam,

As you may be aware, Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) was established as a unique democratic international platform for unrepresented nations, minorities, and indigenous peoples in 1991. UNPO promotes the non-violent settlement of disputes, the protection of the environment, the preservation of indigenous cultures and linguistic rights.  We are writing to you because the 11 February 2009 marked the 18th Anniversary of the founding of the UNPO and also the annual UNPO International Day of Action. This year we marked the UNPO Day of Action with the launch of a new campaign called “Earth, Exploitation and Survival” which aims to raise awareness of the myriad of problems related to the environmental exploitation and degradation that many of our Members face on a daily basis. Many indigenous groups and minorities lack the voice and representation in domestic and international decision-making processes to protect and defend their resources, land rights and cultural heritage and the enjoyment of basic human rights tied to their environment. We know that these issues are also at the forefront of your organization. As such, we believe that you might have an interest in publishing or linking to some of our articles. In addition your constituency might be interested in the Campaign and we’d kindly ask you to consider further publishing the campaign, so as to raise as much awareness about this issue as possible. Please click here for the EES webpage:

We are also renewing our campaign for wider ratification of the International Labour Organisation Convention 169, concerning Indigenous and tribal Peoples in Independent Countries. The Convention confers a wide catalogue of obligations on governments to coordinate systematic action to protect the rights of indigenous peoples but has been ratified by only 20 nations to date [February 2009]. We would greatly appreciate it if you and your members could sign our petition in order to support this campaign, which can be found here:http://www.unpo.org/content/view/8278/236/

This week we have published an article focusing on the poisoned roots of the Ethiopian flower industry – just in time for Valentine’s Day! Please click here for the EES Article of the Week: “Blossoming Trade Conceals Roots of Exploitation” by Maggie Murphy:http://www.unpo.org/content/view/8278/236/

We thank you for your support and look forward to a productive partnership.

Best wishes,

Maggie Murphy
