UNPO: IN PURSUIT OF THE RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION
Some of history’s most victimised peoples are obliterated; others eventually achieve statehood. Why?
UNPO 2009 Campaign: Earth, Exploitation and Survival
The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization have launched their 2009 campaign entitled "Earth, Exploitation and Survival". It hopes to raise awareness of the myriad of problems related to the environmental exploitation and degradation that many of their indigenous Members face on a daily basis. Every week they will be publishing an article or interview related to exploitation and land. The campaign includes a petition for the wider ratification of ILO Convention 169. UNPO promotes the non-violent settlement of disputes, the protection of the environment, the preservation of indigenous cultures and linguistic rights. We are writing to you because the 11 February 2009 marked the 18th Anniversary of the founding of the UNPO and also the annual UNPO International Day of Action. This year we marked the UNPO Day of Action with the launch of a new campaign called “Earth, Exploitation and Survival” which aims to raise awareness of the myriad of problems related to the environmental exploitation and degradation that many of our Members face on a daily basis. Many indigenous groups and minorities lack the voice and representation in domestic and international decision-making processes to protect and defend their resources, land rights and cultural heritage and the enjoyment of basic human rights tied to their environment. We know that these issues are also at the forefront of your organization. As such, we believe that you might have an interest in publishing or linking to some of our articles. In addition your constituency might be interested in the Campaign and we’d kindly ask you to consider further publishing the campaign, so as to raise as much awareness about this issue as possible.
